Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Research

It is essential that well-prepared graduates of the department engage in novel research projects while fulfilling the major requirements. Beginning in the sophomore year, research projects within the department allow students to expand their knowledge, experience, and interest in specific fields of chemistry. A wide array of research projects is available under the supervision of Dr. Boyd-Kimball (biochemistry and neuroscience), Dr. Burlingham (organic chemistry and enzymology), Dr. Gotch (physical chemistry and materials), Dr. Mason (synthetic inorganic chemistry), and Dr. Draves (physical and environmental chemistry).

Students participating in research have dedicated research and study space in our new research labs in Bracy Hall. In addition to fall and spring semester projects, grant-supported summer research opportunities are available on campus. A number of students have taken the opportunity to travel to other colleges and universities for federally funded research.

Students must complete a Senior Culminating Experience (SCE) as part of the college-wide graduation requirement. In the past, this requirement has been fulfilled by either on-campus or off-campus research. Bracy Hall has provided us dedicated research space and significantly improved instrumentation. Thus, opportunities for students to participate in on-campus research have increased substantially.
