THE ANNUAL ECC UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Saturday, April 5, 2008
10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Muskingum College
New Concord, OH

We would like to invite all ECC students to participate in the annual ECC Mathematics Competition. The competition consists of students taking a three-hour exam in teams of three or four, working as a group. The exam is written and graded by a mathematician at Concordia College of Minnesota specifically for this contest, and will consist of 10 problems, ranging from a problem or two that nearly everyone will probably solve, to a couple which are of Putnam level and are likely to separate out the most exceptional students. Most questions, however, will require only mathematics below the differential equations/linear algebra level.

Prize money is given to the first, second, and third place teams as follows:

First Place: $50 per team member
Second Place: $30 per team member
Third Place: $20 per team member

Prior to the competition snacks will be provided. The exam will be followed by a pizza party for all participants. The party is free of charge, and there is no fee for the exam --- all funds (except travel) are provided by the ECC. Thank you ECC!

This is an excellent opportunity for your students to use their mathematical skills cooperatively in a fun atmosphere, as well as to meet other mathematics students at ECC colleges. Last year's competition was a great success, and we hope to have another fantastic turnout!

If you have students interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please reply to Gerry Wuchter at wuchtegj@muc.edu as soon as possible. Indicate the number of 3- or 4- student teams from your institution that would like to participate.
