For nearly the past decade, the Beta Iota Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at Mount Union College has been involved with a number of philanthropic initiative in Kursk, Russia.  These have included, support for Edik A. and his family, the purchase of computers and supplies for a Russian Orthodox Sunday School, and teaching materials and supplies for several schools and organizations in Kursk.  In January 2005, a new program was begun: support for the Ponery orphanage near Kursk.  Members of Beta Iota frequently travel to Russia to assist with these programs, with the next trip scheduled for May 2009.

 The Ponery Orphanage Program

Ponery is located about 30 minutes beyond Korennaya Pustin and serves as a regional orphanage for the northern portion of the Kursk Obelisk.  It presently houses 60 children, mostly abused and abandoned between ages 18 months to 16 years.    In consultation with the orphanage’s director, Beta Iota purchased a television set for the home (they had only one for 60 children), which we delivered on Orthodox Christmas Eve (January 6 2005).  In May, brothers plan to bring money to purchase sporting equipment and a karaoke machine (the kids really want this!).  We also plan to spend a night at the orphanage and have time to interact more with the children.  Beta Iota has made a long-term commitment to this orphanage and these children - these kids have had enough disappointment and loss in their lives - we plan on making things a bit easier for them.
